Drive part of the way, walk the rest

If you want time on foot without a full day of walking, or the mountain without the whole climb, a combined day may suit you. What is possible depends on the route, the vehicle and the conditions, so agree the plan before the day.

Ways to combine driving and walking

These are ideas to discuss, not fixed trips:

  • Lake Parz to Goshavank. Drive to one end, walk the forest trail and be picked up at the other. Published estimates differ by direction: HIKEArmenia gives Goshavank → Parz as 7.2 km and about 4 hours; Armenian Explorer gives Parz → Goshavank as 6.5 km and about 2.5 hours.
  • Mount Dimats on foot from a mapped start. Drive to the start of a published route and hike up, with an arranged return. See the three routes on the Dimats route map.
  • A shorter walk on the mountain. Ask the operator whether and where a vehicle can drop you or meet you on your chosen route. This depends on the route and conditions and must be confirmed for the day.

Walking on Dimats

Hiking up Dimats is a proper mountain hike of moderate to challenging difficulty: a long climb through forest, then open meadows with no shade. Go only in good weather and tell someone your route.

The published GPX routes are 10.4 km one way via Haghartsin village and 7.9 km via the Haghartsin Monastery road. The third track is an ATV-only trail; it is not a jeep route. These are planned routes, not a report of current conditions.

What to agree with your driver

  • The exact drop-off and meeting points, and a fixed meeting time.
  • What happens if you are late or the weather turns. Mobile coverage on the mountain can be patchy, so do not rely on calling.
  • Waiting time and the total fare, agreed in advance.
  • Whether the vehicle can reach the meeting point in wet conditions.

What to bring

  • Closed shoes with good grip.
  • A windproof or warm jacket; the summit is noticeably colder.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; the meadows have no shade.
  • Water and snacks; there are no shops on the summit.
  • Your route downloaded in advance.
