How to get there, when to go and what to see on one of the most scenic summits near Dilijan.

Where is Mount Dimats?
Dimats belongs to the Ijevan range and rises above the forests of Tavush, in the Dilijan National Park area. Its lower slopes are covered in dense forest, alpine meadows begin higher up, and a cliff drops away behind the summit.
That contrast is why Dimats is so popular with photographers: on a clear day you can see several mountain ridges one behind another, and in the morning the clouds often sit below the summit.
How to get to Mount Dimats
From Dilijan
The route map below separates the approach via Haghartsin village from the approach via the Haghartsin Monastery road. These are different starting points. Choose the mapped start before planning your transfer from Dilijan or Teghut. The unpaved climb requires a suitable off-road vehicle and an experienced driver; confirm vehicle suitability and current access with the operator.
From Yerevan
If you are travelling from Yerevan, allow time for the return journey. Send your starting point and preferred date on WhatsApp: we can share route notes and may suggest a partner operator; if an operator is suggested, they confirm pickup, route, total duration and price with you directly.
On foot
Hiking up is possible, but it's a proper mountain hike of moderate to challenging difficulty: a long climb through forest, then open meadows with no shade. Go only in good weather and tell someone your route.
In your own car
You can't reach the summit in a regular car. In your own 4x4, only with off-road experience: after rain the clay and rocks get slippery, and mobile coverage in the mountains can drop out.
When to visit Mount Dimats
- Late spring to early summer: green meadows, wildflowers, sometimes leftover snow on top.
- Summer: the most reliable season for the tracks; it's cooler on top than in Dilijan.
- September to early October: autumn colours across the Tavush forests and clear air.
- Cold season: access depends on snow and track conditions — check before you go.
Mornings are best: a higher chance of clouds below the summit and less risk of afternoon storms in summer.
What to see on and around Dimats
- The summit and alpine meadows — views over the Tavush forests and neighbouring ridges; horses sometimes graze here.
- Shaghot waterfall — a waterfall in the Dimats area. Confirm access, walking requirements and whether a stop fits your route; it is not automatically included in a mountain trip.
- Haghartsin Monastery — a medieval monastery complex in the forest, on the way to one of the approaches. Visit guide →
- Lake Sevan and Sevanavank — an optional stop if travelling from Yerevan via Sevan; allow separate time and agree it before booking.
- Old Dilijan — Sharambeyan Street and craft workshops. More in our guide Things to do in Dilijan.
Plan a day around Mount Dimats
If Dimats is your priority, allow a dedicated part of the day for mountain access and time at the viewpoint. Do not combine every monastery, lake and waterfall into a fixed schedule. Travel time depends on your starting point, stops and conditions.
For photography, decide whether you want landscape views, time at the summit or a particular light. Clouds below the peak and clear views are never guaranteed. Bring your own camera; drone filming, a picnic or a waterfall visit is not included unless the operator explicitly confirms it.

What to bring
- A windproof or warm jacket — even in summer, the summit is noticeably colder.
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — the meadows have no shade.
- Water and snacks: there are no shops or cafés on the summit.
- Closed shoes with good grip.
- A camera or drone — the views are worth it. Fly responsibly and not over people or animals.
Safety
- Check the forecast: fog and storms move in quickly in the mountains.
- Don't drive across steep side slopes — especially with passengers and children.
- Don't go alone in your own vehicle; a local driver or guide is safer.
- Mobile coverage on top can be patchy — agree on a return time with someone.
