Choose a day that fits your interests, walking ability and comfort on mountain roads.
This guide compares trip formats. Message Offroad Dilijan about your preferred route: we can share route and season notes and may suggest a partner operator; if an operator is suggested, they confirm what is possible with you directly. A driver is not automatically a walking or cultural guide.
Which type of Dilijan tour suits you?
Scroll horizontally to view all columns.
| Type | Best suited to | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Cultural sightseeing | Visitors interested in Old Dilijan, Haghartsin and Goshavank | Actual stops, walking and steps, guide language, time at each site |
| Guided hiking | Visitors who want time on forest trails rather than frequent vehicle stops | Distance, ascent, walking time, trail conditions and return transport |
| 4×4 trip to Mount Dimats | Visitors comfortable with rough roads who want mountain scenery | Exact destination, vehicle, seat belts, road conditions and weather alternatives |
| Private itinerary | Groups who need a particular pace, starting point or combination of stops | Which changes are possible, total driving time and the full price |
A private trip can offer more flexibility; a shared group trip follows the provider’s schedule. Ask what is actually flexible before paying. A driver providing transport is not necessarily a guide who explains the sites.
Sightseeing: monasteries and Old Dilijan
For a culture-focused day, start with Haghartsin Monastery, Goshavank or Old Dilijan. Check how long you spend at each stop and whether the visit includes a guided explanation or only transport.
Do not assume a trip described as “Dilijan and Sevan” also includes a forest hike or Mount Dimats. Ask for the full itinerary, including driving time. Our Dilijan guide helps you choose the places that matter most to you.

Hiking: check the trail, not just the label
A “nature tour” might mean short walks beside the vehicle or several hours on a trail. Ask for the route, walking distance, elevation gain and expected pace. Share any mobility limits with the provider before agreeing on a route.
Published hiking estimates refer to different tracks and directions: Armenian Explorer lists Parz → Goshavank at 6.5 km/about 2.5 hours; HIKEArmenia lists Goshavank → Parz at 7.2 km/about 4 hours. Choose the specific track and direction, check conditions, and add stops and transfers. Arrange pickup at the finish. Do not automatically add Mount Dimats or other visits to a hiking day. Is Mount Dimats included in a standard tour?
Do not assume so. A mountain trip needs its own route and time allowance. Unpaved access, visibility and weather can affect the plan. If Dimats is your priority, ask whether the itinerary reaches the viewpoint and what happens if access is unsuitable.
A buggy ride around Dilijan does not automatically reach Dimats. Confirm the destination, who drives, protective equipment and the operator’s age and licence requirements. For the mountain itself, read our Mount Dimats guide.
Questions to ask before booking
- Route and timing: Where do we start and finish? How much time is spent driving, walking and visiting each place?
- Guide: Is this transport with a driver or a guided visit? Which language will the guide use?
- Group and vehicle: Is the trip private or shared? What vehicle and passenger capacity are confirmed?
- Price: Is the quote per person or per vehicle? Are transport, guiding, meals and any activity fees included?
- Children and comfort: What age limits, restraints or child seats apply? Is the route suitable for the people travelling?
- Weather and cancellation: What happens if rain, fog or road conditions prevent the route? Get cancellation and refund terms in writing.
- Preparation: What footwear, layers, water and other equipment should we bring?
Do not treat a picnic, drone filming or a particular photo stop as included unless it is confirmed in the offer. If you dislike bumpy roads or are prone to motion sickness, discuss a gentler itinerary before booking.
Build a realistic day
Choose a main priority: monastery visits, a forest walk or mountain scenery. Leave time for transfers and changing conditions instead of trying to fit every place into one day. Start with the Dilijan day plans and the individual destination guides, then agree a realistic itinerary directly with your chosen provider.
