Season by season
- Late spring to early summer: green meadows, wildflowers, sometimes leftover snow on top.
- Summer: the most reliable season for the tracks; it is cooler on top than in Dilijan.
- September to early October: autumn colours across the Tavush forests and clear air.
- Cold season: access depends on snow and track conditions; check before you go.
Early spring
In early spring, snow can linger on top, and access depends on snow and track conditions. After rain the clay and rocks get slippery, so whether a vehicle can reach the summit is a question for the day, not the season. Ask about current access before you plan around the mountain, and keep the rest of the day flexible.
Reading the day
- Mornings are best: a higher chance of clouds below the summit and less risk of afternoon storms in summer.
- Fog and storms move in quickly in the mountains; check the forecast.
- Clear views and clouds below the summit are never guaranteed.
Agree a plan B before you pay
Mountain access depends on weather and road conditions. Before confirming a trip, agree what happens if rain, fog or the track prevents the route, and get cancellation and refund terms in writing.
Good options when the mountain is off:
- Haghartsin Monastery, on a paved road with parking.
- Old Dilijan and the city park. See Things to do in Dilijan.
- Lake Parz, if the road and seasonal facilities suit your date.
- Goshavank in Gosh village.
What to bring in changeable weather
- A windproof or warm jacket, even in summer.
- Closed shoes with good grip.
- Water and snacks; there is nothing to buy on top.
FAQ
Can you go up Mount Dimats in early spring?
Sometimes. Access depends on snow and track conditions, which change from day to day. Ask about current access before planning around the mountain.
What happens if it rains on the day?
After rain the track gets slippery and the route may not be suitable. Agree alternatives and cancellation or refund terms before you confirm a trip.
Is the morning better for Dimats?
Usually. Mornings give a higher chance of clouds below the summit and, in summer, less risk of afternoon storms.
